Drinking coffee doubles risk of miscarriageNothing too new in this I suppose other than it has now been confirmed following clinical trials.

That's all very well but how many cups (mugs) of tea or coffee would equate to 200mg of caffeine?
Am I the only one who doesn't know this?
When pg with Hana I went off tea (I don't drink coffee) so it wasn't an issue but I'm still drinking it now, today I've had 3 cups, when I'm not at work I'll only have one cup first thing in the morning but when I'm at work it's different somehow.
Anyway 3 is my fill for the day I wont be having any more today!

Good point!! Not a lot it would appear.
I just googled it and found this:
There is about 75-200mg of caffeine in a cup of coffee, about 50mg in a cup of tea and a 360ml bottle of cola contains about 30-50mg of caffeine.
I rarely drink any of the above but had started rinking one latte in the mornings - always decaff, but i am not sure if decaff means completely decaffeinated or not.....
on the news I heard earlier it said more than 2 cups a day
on the news I heard earlier it said more than 2 cups a day
but is that tea or coffee because like C-L's post I thought there was more caffeine in coffee than there is in tea?

you can get decaf tea, I drank this whilst pregnant as I went off coffee and onto tea! I also drank decaf coffee on the rare occasions i would drink it.

Hi Sally
The trouble I had when pg with hana is that because I stopped the tea, I had a headache every single day until I was 16 weeks due to withdrawls from not having the caffeine and that was unbearable with no LO to look after, let alone now, I think I'll stick to having just one cup of tea a day now just to be on the safe side!
On the plus side today I have almost drunk my daily requirement of water as well as drinking lots of tea, but I've lost count of how many times I've been to the loo, someone is going to twig something soon I'm sure!!

They were talking about coffee
All my pregnancy books say that caffeine can increase the risk of m/c - i dont know why they think it's new news? Everyone at work is like "oh have you heard about caffeine?" and i was like well yeah that's always been the case? As it happens i cant drink coffee anyway (does very strnage things to me!) But i have a cup of tea in the morning and then maybe one when i get home from work - if i feel like any others then i have decaff tea. I dont drink fizzy drinks either as they can have a high caffeine content - i go by the theory that if i dont consume caffeine in my drinks then i can eat as much chocolate as i like!!! x
Not to be dismissive or anything because I do agree that excessive caffeine is harmful and did indeed reduce my intake to 1 cup a day when PG, however these "clinical trials" and "new evidence" do my head in... apparently this "new evidence" this is based on 1000 women in California Again though - hardly representative of all women now is it? Sorry the sceptical statistician in me says these figures are only the starting point.. NOT the full blown answer.
Sorry.. will put my soap box away now!

Doesn't that depend on how the sample was selected ? ;0) I agree though that figures are easily manipulated depending on how a trial is run and the bias of the researchers.
I think at the moment they are tending towards everything being bad for pregnant women! As with all statistics, unless you have a lot of information about them (how the people were chosen, what kind of people they were etc) the stats are really meaningless. For all we know all of the people who were drinking the coffee in the trial were also smoking/having hot baths/old/bungee jumping etc as well! As SWS says, we are already recommended to reduce caffeine intake and these new stats seem to be trying to scare people into not drinking coffee. Of course, you need to be careful and some things can be harmful to the baby, but I think most people can use common sense to decide what to avoid. Being really stressed about what you can/can't have and cutting everything out of your diet isn't going to be much good either!

Sorry to rant a bit, but I tend to be a bit sceptical about all of these 'scientific studies' that are done. Usually there is some other study somewhere with exactly the opposite result!

Never drink tea or coffee and I never have. Hated it ever since I was a child. I've still experienced miscarriages!!
Soon there won't be anything considered safe for pregnant ladies!
